Decline in national birth rates

Teen birth rates have hit their lowest level in decades.

The CDC issued a report showing a decline in teen pregnancy birth rates, which have hit an all-time low. This decline was especially surprising to a health and pregnancy educators given the minor uptick of rates in 2007 and 2008. Stop Diabetes Campaign

A lot is going on in November, healthwise, and with all that you could be involved in, it’s important to remember that it’s Diabetes Awareness Month. Yes, before we all gorge ourselves toward the end of this month, we need to pause, calm ourselves, ignore the daydreams of sweet potato casserole decorated with melting marshmallows, and instead get serious about curtailing diabetes. The American Diabetes Association is promoting the month with their campaign, “Stop Diabetes.” They have tons of events, posters, banners and even the everyday items that make their site so accessible—great, healthy recipes, anyone? ADA is pushing for 1 million people to make the commitment. Consider standing up and being counted!

Trans fats and Breastfeeding

Are you passing along a healthy meal?

Trans fats have basically become a synonym for evil these days, so when I read this article, I knew there would be a renewed offensive against the processed and dangerous tastiness. And if you think about it, we all know that breastfed babies eat what mom eats, so it makes sense that babies would also be getting a helping of trans fats as well. But I guess this will just remind us to be a little extra vigilant as we promote breastfeeding for a healthy baby and a healthy diet for mom.
